Record Company

Columbia Records is a premier recording label, under the ownership of Sony Music Entertainment, operating under the Columbia Music Group. It was founded in 1888, evolving from an earlier enterprise, the American Graphophone Company—successor to the Volta Graphophone Company. Columbia is the oldest brand name in pre-recorded sound, being the first record company to produce pre-recorded records as opposed to blank cylinders. Columbia Records went on to release records by an array of notable singers, instrumentalists, and bands. From 1961 to 1990, its recordings were released outside the U.S. and Canada on the CBS Records label (for Columbia Broadcasting System, its parent from 1938 to 1988) before adopting the Columbia name in most of the world.
It is one of Sony Music's three flagship record labels with the others being Epic Records and RCA Records.
Until 1989, Columbia Records had no connection to Columbia Pictures, which used various other names for record labels they owned, including Colpix and later Arista; rather, it was connected to CBS, which stood for Columbia Broadcasting System, a broadcasting media company which purchased Columbia Records in the late 1930s, and which had been co-founded in 1927 by Columbia Records itself. Though Arista was sold to BMG, it would later become a sister label to Columbia Records through Sony Music; both are connected to Columbia Pictures through Sony Corporation of America, worldwide parent of both the music and motion picture arms of Sony.

Their artist are: Beyoncé, Adel, Little Mix, MGMT, Willow Smith.

We wrote a letter to this company and asked if we can use their song. It looked like this:

Set Designe Meeting

Today we had a set design meeting with Scott, a professional set designer.

We prepared for this by doing some basic but clear sketches to show him what we wanted.

He really liked the pop-up diagram we had made, with the smoke and lights coming off the page, and said that he understood what we were going for.
We also discussed shooting the video (which will take place on the 19th of November) and will need to shoot in 50 FPS and record the singer/instrumentalists going through the song at double speed, with the song sped up.

Animatics

This is our animatics it will help us to show how do we see the final product. It took quite a while to look through all of our shots and choose the best but anyway I managed to do it before the deadline. As we were editing it we recalled how to check in and check out of the final cut pro, how to use different tools and anything else we've learned in final cut pro in previous year. Also one of us always made notes about the process so we won't forget how to do something in the program. This process was very interesting for me because I finally had something that represents a final product.

Having clear and detailed animatics is absolutely crucial for a successful project as this is a guide for everyone involved in it. For example on the stage when the actors are following the same script everything is fine but if the script is constantly changing and not everybody aware of it team can't be one the same level that's why process will take longer that it could be. It is absolutely the same with the music video if every body knows what are they doing then there is no problem.

Our storyboard is very detailed and has many different signs that represents different camera actions this will help on the shooting day as we know which shots do we need. For example on the drawing it is hard to represent the lighting so we have to wright notes to say what lighting do we need because lighting is a very important part of creating the mood of the video.

The weakness of still animatics is that it represents particular moment and not showing the whole action, if you are filming a very long tracking shot you will wright a note about it but visually it won't be represented on the paper.

After creating animatics we found out that one of the location doesn't fit with the others so we decided to cut out the recording studio bit and stay in the studio for all of the shots.

I found out different ways of matching images with the beat of the music so it won't be the same all the way through.

Working on storyboard

Our group (Me, Meggie and Raf)
We've been working really hard on our storyboard, wanted to make sure that all signs and marks are clear for every one and they will make sense in our future production. We separated task so everyone had the equal amount of work. One of the members of our group can't draw? Not a problem! We took screen grabs from different music videos that represents kind of shots we want to have in our final product. As I found out this process is very hard but creative. You have to think different and put all your thoughts on the paper so other will understand what do you actually mean.
