Se7en Title Sequense

Se7ven
Opening credits of Se7en have now gone down in history as one of the most iconic and influential opening sequences of the 1990’s. In early years film produsers desided that opening sequense should not distract you so that the audience only receive the information they need. Kyle Cooper had slightly different point of view, that's why his titels is iconic now.

Kyle Cooper

“Almost single-handedly revitalizing the main title sequence as an art form.”

Kyle Coopers groundbreaking title sequence for Se7en (1995) changed the way we look and think about title design today and is probably the most imitated main title ever made. In New York Times Magazine the Se7en title sequence was discribed as “One of the most important design innovations of the 1990s”.
Cooper founded two internationally recognized film design companies, Imaginary Forces and Prologue Films. His work includes over 100 film title sequences. Among his most memorable ones are Dawn of the Dead, Spider-Man (all three), The Islang of Dr. Moreau.
I was really interested in Kyle Cooper because of his work he did with the film titles for the films. Not that long ago I recognized that title sequense is very important part of the movie it helps to intrigue the audience and give the main idea about movie they about to see.

Thriller Idea

The idea of our thriller was Theo’s. When we were divided on groups every participant told about their idea. Somehow we decided that this one probably will be the best because all of us were inspired with Russian mafia. By starting developing it we found out that everybody in our group have the same point of view on filming this idea and according to school conditions it won’t be really complicated to film. To present our idea we decided to tell our story line and present some pictures of props, set and costumes. Personally, I really like this idea because there is many things we can do to make it look interesting.

Hannah sound analyse. Opening scene.

Using non-diegetic techno music with hard base while Hanna is escaping director wanted to put pressure on audience. Diegetic breathing and footsteps are slightly louder than in real life this effect wasuse to make situation look more stressful. During Hannas action music changes when she is nervous or finds the way out. Also there was some changes in non-diegetic music when audience saw a man and when he recognises that Hanna is around. Diegetic sound of runnig and shouing people let audience know that they don't want her to escape. Also diegetic sounds of fighting doesn't sound like real but it makes Hanna look more dangerouse and violent.

Editing your prelim task

 Editing your prelim task

During our editing process I’ve learned how to use Final Cut Pro, how to check in and out before and after editing, as well as putting shots on timeline and cut them. Also we’ve learnt how to edit sound. You have to find matching sound ant copy it, than you need to find right moment

One thing I really liked about editing is that when you film you can hardly see the final product, but when you edit it starts to make some sense. Also I’ve really enjoyed putting shots together so it looks very smooth together and how different angles makes simple conversation look more interesting.

I found a little bit challenging that in group of three we had only one computer. Honestly I got used to work by my self while I was editing my videos, but when you work in the team you have to consider everybody’s point of view. It wasn’t that hard, but not all of us had opportunity to work on the computer. Also if you haven’t got any experience on editing so you might find it a bit challenging.

Personally I think it wasn’t very hard to match shots and put them on storyboard. I find it very interesting because that’s how you start to build a story and try to tell it to the audience.

I find extra shots very useful. We had much more ideas, but we haven’t got enough time to film it. We wanted to add some interesting close ups of keyboard and hand taping on table. But anyway extra shots helps to send message of what you wanted to show to the audience.

I wouldn’t change anything about editing because I think we’ve done really good job, but next I’ll film more extra shots to make sequence more interesting.

We did very well. In case of time and number of shots we’ve had we took the best out of it. During editing process I’ve tried to match shots and put them on timeline, also I gave some useful ideas for example in which order we might put shots to tell our story.

Iron Man 2 Poster

On this poster we can see a brutal man, so we might suggest that this is action movie. The main character is from comics books so in audience it's more likely to see males rather than females. Also red color and his costume indicates a lot of violence in the film and clouds on the background highlights the mood of this movie.

LOL Poster

From this poster I can definitely say that this is movie for teenagers. We can see a teen girl lying on the bed and texting. Also soft colors shows us that this movie is about love and relationships generally. This movie is probably more for females, because girl is a main character.

Long Kiss Goodnight

Non diegetic music sounds very depressive and keep us in tense that something terrible is going to happend. Also in this music we can hear adding non-diegetic sounds which sounds like flash they meant to show us somrthing important on screen. On the background there was a sound of children playing and screeming. As well there was diegetic sound of loading up a gun and falling grenade on the floor. After that non-diegetic music stopes and new comes in. It is christmas chorus and then it switches to rock'n'roll style christmas song it supports with diegetic cheering crowd. On the top of music we can her non-diegetic monolog of a woman.

In the very beginning camera films close up of a handwriting which follows extrem close-up of it but from the other angle. Then there is a close-up of knife trying to cut something. After camera floats through family photos, showing faces of different people than it switches to a close-up of ICA document and after there is extreme close-up of cassette where we see a name. Than it follows with shifting camera close-up of braslete with a key and two lipstics than it suddenly switchs to the simular shot but with bullets. After this goes two gun close-ups, first one is loading the gun and the second one where gun points to the audience direction. Then it switches to some cristmas presents and suddenly to the eye close up. After we can see a mid shot sniper and then matching eye line shot so we can see through the sight. That again it switches to christmas decorations close up.

Womens hand wrighting name all over again can signify that she is trying to be someone else. Knife highlights violence in the movie, it's a first signe that it's a thriller. Family photos might signify that something terrible happend to them. CIA document let us know that this movie is going to be about a spy. Cassette with the name on is recording something that highlights that someone is watching main character.  Jewelery and lipstics illustrating that main character is a woman. Bullets and guns signifies violence. Christmas decorations let us know the periode of action.

In editing they’ve reduced two shots, so we can se handwriting over every shot. Also they’ve used negative effect to contrast shots. This effect makes regular things look more evil. Also I’ve seen something like Kuleshov effect for example when negative knife shot appears on screen.

Opening sequence

Idea of opening sequence of a thriller.

<!--[if !vml]-->
My opening sequence of thriller is based on idea of kidnapping. Because it can happen with anyone and anywere. The location might be at nightclub, bar, restaurnt, any public place. Preferably in nightclub (studio) This location will be very close to all young people, so that might freak them out because it might happen to them as well.

So the main idea would be that group of friends went out clubbing. They are dancing, having fun and drinking in the bar. But suddenly in the crowd audience will notice suspicious guy who is watching them right from the corner. He might put something in their drinks while they’re looking in the other direction. After that one of the friends will get sick and will go in toilets direction and that suspicious guy will follow him/her.

To film it we need big dark room and nightclub lighting.
Also we will need something like DJ mixer to give studio right atmosphere, improvised bar and some glasses to put on it. To create atmosphere of club we need some dancing people on the background.

Preliminary task.

I really enjoyed thinking about the idea of that dialogue. In which situation our charecters going to have this conversation and what kind of relationship is betwen them. Also I find very interesting finding different angles and types of shots to make it more likely to watch.

I've learnt that you have to be consentrated on what are you doing during filming process. Because making film is very timeconsuming process so to make more useful you need to concentarate. As well as this I've learnt that you need to remember all of thing you need to to with camera, because by forgeting one of this it can ruing all that you've done. Also we've used 180 degree rule to film conversation.

Fact that different people have different points of view always was a distructor, but you have to learn how to find comprimise.

I think we did very well. I was an actor but still I helped with finding right camera angle, brainstorming and  creating interesting ideas.

I wish we might have a little bit more time to finish all of our ideas.

We where filming in edit suite and we desidet to use some props from there like music keyboard, regular keyboard, headphones  etc.

During your filming process we used alot of differet shots. For example we've used close-ups  of bouth actors to show their emotions. Also we've use low angle shot to show the status of charecter as well as point of view shot.

I  was one of the actors, so basically I was reading the dialogue. Also i provided some ideas about how we should act and which language we are going to use. I helped to find interesting anlgles and developing our storyline.
